Though we might consider them one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World, they are not the mystical, magical things that we believe them to be. In the United States, the government classifies them as medical devices and, as such, not only require a valid prescription from an eye doctor, but they have some pretty stringent rules that we wearers have to follow to keep our eyes healthy.
By the way, did you know that any contact lenses – including “decorative” lenses that are used for changing the eye’s color or for special effects – should not be purchased from flea markets, costume shops or beauty salons? These are being sold illegally and, usually, without a doctor’s prescription. Buying lenses in this manner opens you and your eyes up to a multitude of serious health risks from infections all the way up to and including permanent loss of vision!
As long as you follow your doctor’s instructions and purchase your lenses either from him or some other reputable outlet, your eyes will do well while wearing contact lenses.
Contact lenses are an amazing creation! They allow us to see the world without a frame around it. They allow people to see those fabulous peepers of yours! As long as you follow the rules that your eye doctor sets for you, you should be able to wear contact lenses for a long time.
